Learn to Play - Introductory Program
What to Expect
This comprehensive 6-week (on thursdays) beginner volleyball program coached by our AIRTIME coaches who understand the volleyball pathway from a beginner all the way to a varsity athlete. This program serves as the perfect entry point for young athletes ages 11-14 who are new to volleyball or have minimal experience with the sport. Unlike traditional programs that assume prior volleyball knowledge, this curriculum bridges the gap between general athletic ability and volleyball-specific skills while maintaining our high feedback environment. Athletes will develop fundamental movement patterns, basic ball control, and essential volleyball skills through exploration-based learning and progressive skill development. Each session begins with 30 minutes of movement preparation on the turf, focusing on agility, balance, and coordination (ABCs) through volleyball-specific movements. Athletes will develop running mechanics, jumping and landing patterns, shuffling techniques, and flexibility essential for volleyball success. This athletic development component ensures athletes build the physical literacy foundation necessary for safe and effective volleyball participation. The 60-minute volleyball portion progresses from ball familiarization and court awareness through serving, passing, setting, and attacking fundamentals, culminating in game play and skill integration. Athletes will explore volleyball movements through games and modified activities, developing problem-solving skills alongside technical abilities. Training emphasizes movement quality over outcome achievement, ensuring athletes develop healthy patterns that support long-term development. Early sessions prioritize ball control, spatial awareness, and basic movement patterns through fun, exploratory activities. Mid-program sessions introduce fundamental skills like underhand serving, forearm passing, and basic attacking movements with emphasis on consistency over power. Final sessions integrate all learned skills into modified game play, preparing athletes for successful transition to club-level volleyball. Expect high-energy activities with maximum participation, progressive challenges matched to individual abilities, and celebration of effort and improvement. Athletes will leave with volleyball-specific movement competence, understanding of basic rules and positions, and most importantly, genuine enthusiasm for continued volleyball participation.
